While scrolling through my timeline, I liked a post by Diddy about a New York Fashion Week event he was hosting at the Brooklyn Pier. I liked the post to acknowledge his event but after clicking on the link, I noticed he was charging a hefty admissions fee which I found to be distasteful. I replied to a colleague’s comment under the post so that users are not misled about NY Fashion Week designers charging an entry fee. Typically, industry-related events are by invitation only and not disclosed to the general public. In the past, Diddy held his invite-only Sean John fashion shows at the Fashion Week tents, but I realize this may have been one of his niche marketing strategies.

I added the post to my stories with the caption “I remember when the shows were private” to showcase the shift in the marketing of big design houses. It is not common for fashion brands to post their events on social media unless there are fees associated. Of course, after sharing the post, the algorithm shifted, and I was suddenly inundated with NYFW content.

I commented on Lisa Ever’s post regarding the migrant crisis in New York City where the NYPD confiscated mopeds stolen by a ring of thieves living at a migrant shelter. A user questioned why New York City has to provide shelter to migrants as a sanctuary city. Instead of posting a separate comment, I wanted to educate this user with key facts on how the sanctuary laws came into place and measures being taken by our government to control this humanitarian crisis.

I was rather tickled by a post The Cut published about the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. They stated that the show “could have been an email”. The caption was even more hysterical because as a woman, I dread the discomfort of wearing a bra which implies the fashion show was as painful to watch. I shared the post in my stories because it is one of the most highly anticipated fashion shows, however this season’s production turned out to be disappointing.

Facebook

While on Facebook, I researched how to restrict my posts so that they are not visible to everyone. I also wanted to make sure that my contact information was updated so that family members could reach me. In the past, friends have messaged me to let me know my account may have been hacked. As a result, I have found myself logging into Facebook more often. I recently changed my password due to suspicious activity and had to change it again because a fake profile sent friend requests to my followers. Tech Crunch lists several steps to protect your online security, which I found very helpful. It is recommended that you change your password and report the activity right away.

1010WINS & Instagram

I checked in with 1010WINS news radio to see why the traffic is so horrendous and what is happening around the world. In one segment, the reporter mentioned the NYPD’s use of drones during the Labor Day weekend to combat crime. I shared the story via Instagram to show how safe the parade was. It is typically known to be violent, ending with gunfire and fatalities. The use of surveillance proved to be effective in this instance, and there were no reported incidents leading up to the parade. Unfortunately, the night ended with one isolated incident in which someone was murdered. Nonetheless, the drones proved to be effective in finding the suspect almost instantaneously.

I came across a very cool post on how the snow, sand, and sea meet at a beach in Japan. Evidently, the mouth of the Tokachi River freezes each winter, causes ice blocks to form, and wash up on the beach. I am longing for a vacation and my kids so desperately want to visit Anime City in Japan therefore, this post led me to do more travel and tourist research. After liking the post by Wasted, the algorithm shifted to tourism and airline travel-related content. In this case, I was fascinated to discover places I was not familiar with along with travel deals to consider.

The content and information I share on social media are useful to data brokers. When I post about Amazon’s use of AI to compile ratings, advertisements and suggestive sales appear in my timeline. The content I share feeds algorithms information that gauges my personal interest. When I am looking to purchase hair products, footwear, apparel, food, or restaurant, several suggestive ads appear for me to choose from. I often visit the NY Bucket List and Timeout New York since their ads appear the most frequently on my timeline.

Anytime I download an app on my mobile device, a promoted ad appears on my Facebook timeline. The other day I downloaded the Western Union app and noticed their promoted ad in my feed. In this case, there was no need for me to click on the link since the app is already installed on my device. I read an interesting article on MIT Technology Review about cross-platform marketing and how advertisers target us across multiple devices. Since we spend a great deal of our time surfing the web on our mobile devices, we will likely view more ads there versus our laptops.

The content I post or share in my stories is relative to hot topics around the globe. I begin my day with local news and “things that make you go hmmm”. I am mindful of posts that could compromise my geographic location. I always reconsider what and when I post content. If I am sharing a live post, I wait until I have left the premises. The last thing I need is for a social stalker or predator to have access to my physical location. The same advice applies to my children when they are sharing TikTok videos. I always make them mindful of what they share online. It is important for them not to share school logos, camp tee shirts, street signs, and photos in front of building numbers. Ensuring their safety deters predators and hackers from obtaining their personal data. Limiting access has always been my mantra!
